Waunakee Police Department

Law enforcement in Waunakee has as much history as the village itself and has grown to meet the ever-increasing needs as requested by residents. Waunakee Law Enforcement dates back to the mid 1890's Waunakee became incorporated in 1893 with 67 yes votes to incorporate and 18 no votes. At the outset, law enforcement was provided by a village marshal or constable, usually on a part time basis. In 1895 Waunakee got its first jail, which cost taxpayers $120. The first part time marshal was paid $4.00 a month, and in 1899 his salary was raised to $5.00 a month with added responsibilities.
The village's elected marshal was replaced by one full-time police officer in 1947. In 1978 the village had 4 police officers, and the following year the first female police officer was hired. In 1988 the village had 6 full time police officers. By 1998, that number had reached 14, and present day is at 18.
The population of Waunakee has grown steadily. In 1880 the population was 300, and by 1970 had grown to 2,100. Since 1970, and especially since the late 1980's, Waunakee has witnessed a dramatic increase in population. The population in January 2007 was 11,010.
